Q: What to expect when getting off of Cymbalta?
I am getting off of Cymbalta after 3 1/2 years. I take it for panic attacks, which have been very severe in my past. I have been having panic attacks for about 8 years and after getting off of other meds they have gotten worse. I am making the desicion b/c my husband and I want to begin planning another child and I dont want to be on meds when that happens. Im nervous about the side effects though my doctor says I can stop cold turkey and it would be fine. Im not buying that. Any thoughts?
A: I would taper off if I were you, it is not easy to do it cold turkey, and you are taking it for a reason, so consider carefully. You will be incapicated if you stop suddenly. Brain zaps are just one symptom of withdrawing, you will also experience anxiety and depression, going back to your untreated state.
Q: I am a diabetic and have nerve problems with my big toe.?
I have nerve pain on the top of my big toe (where the shoe bends) I have had cortisone shots and also bought a carbon insole. None of these helped. Any other suggestions? I also take Cymbalta and it hasn’t helped either
A: Diabetic neuropathy is caused from damage to the nerves. These nerves are damaged by high glucose levels, once damaged they don’t repair ( sometimes at all) nerves and nerve tissue regenerate very very slowly. There are specific medications that treat diabetic neuropathy such as baclofen, neurotin and lyrica. The most important thing is too keep blood glucose levels normal, prevent the damage. Since it has already occurred, I suggest that you keep your blood sugars at a more “normal” level and this will help some. You need to see a physician regarding your toe. This will make sure that there is no impaired blood flow, causing the pain. Diabetics with poor glucose control are at risk for developing circulation difficulties to their extremities ( lower limbs) the blood flow to you toe could be impaired thus causing the pain. This needs to be treated ASAP, this can be life threatening.
Q: anti-depressants free?
I need anti-depressants, but I cannot afford them and I am currently on cymbalta samples, how can I get the meds I need if I can’t afford to buy them. Dr. gives me samples but he can’t keep doing that, and the cymbalta really works well. Wal-mart has the $4.00 perscriptions but my cymbalta isn’t one of them. HELP!!!!
A: Most companies have programs that allow people with low income to receive medications for free. The link below has information for Lilly, the company that makes Cymbalta.
Q: Son of Addict: Does Counseling Always Work? Nine Yr Old is Happy then Angry, is Insecure, Rude, Affectionate?
My daughter is 42; her son is almost 10 and he’s been with us since October due to her cocaine abuse. She has never abused him but she has neglected him and his diet. We also had him for second grade. Daughter sober for 4 months now and on Cymbalta. He’s very sweet and makes all A’s but he is starting to tell us to “shut up.” (he was watching Home Alone 2 & the cop kept saying shut up.) Daughter calls me saying she has to make “a lot of money” so she can get her own place. No one thinks she can pay rent. She quits jobs for silly reasons and lives w/friends.
Her sister, 38, is fine. Terrific. But this one inherited unfortunate genes. Do you think he has anger issues? His dad rarely contacts him. He acts spoiled like asking for a catered party and said You Stink when I didn’t buy him shoes. His mom tells him I caused her drug use. Then she’ll say her BF did.
He also lies daily. Told his friends he’s ten. He had counseling in 3rd & she said he seems ok. He jokes around then gets moody.
A: There is a group associated with Al-Anon (for family members and close friends of alcoholics and addicts) called Alateen (for the children of alcoholics and addicts). I suggest you try out Al-Anon for yourself (it will help you understand the whole family situation much better) and Alateen for your grandson (it is a great, very positive group where he can work on whatever it is that is still bothering him). Also he is ten and is at an age where he likes to test the limits, plus the hormonal ups and downs that are normal at that age, i.e. moodiness and elation. Both Al-Anon and Alateen are free services. These groups will help your family immensely, and eventually your daughter. Good luck!
Q: FIBROMYALGIA & VITAMIN~ D~ DEFICIENCY?????
ANYONE W. FIBROMYALGIA START TAKING VITAMIN D~3 IN HOPES THAT IT IS NOT REALLY FM, ITS VIT.D DEFICIENCY???
I SUFFER FROM SEVERE SYMPTOMS EVERYDAY. MY ONLY RELIEF IS NARCOTICS-only percocets at that. i was already on oxys for almost a yr once i was diagnosed and they cut me off the scripts cold turkey w. out weaning me off) ( and its not a constant relief any longer as my tolerence went up since being diagnosed in 2007)!!!
I AM HOPING SOMEONE HAS HAD THIS ISSUE.. I HAVE TRIED ALL THE MEDS THEY OFFER FOR FM, HOWEVER, THEY MADE ME GAIN A TON OF WEIGHT.. 100LBS IN 10 MONTHS TO BE EXACT. I FINALLY TOOK MYSELF OFF ALL MY MEDS (LYRICA,CYMBALTA,AMITRIPTYLINE,NORTRIPTYLINE,NEURONTIN,AMBIEN ER, SEROQUEL,FLEXIRIL,VICODIN,PERCOCET,MORPHINE,STEROIDS,KLONOPIN,XANEX… JUST TO NAME A FEW!!) COLD TURKEY SUFFERED THROUGH ABSOLUTE HELL W. THE PAIN… JUST ABOUT LOST ALL THE GAINED WEIGHT IN A YR. THAT TOOK ALOT OF PAIN AWAY, HOWEVER, I STILL SUFFER AND IT STOPS MOST OF MY DAILY ROUTINE.
IM DESPERATE AND WILLING TO TRY ANYTHING TO GET SOME RELIEF W.OUT HAVING TO BUY PERCOCETS ON THE ST.S… THAT IS MY ONLY RELIEF!!
ANYONE ALSO ON GLUTEN AND FM????
A: From reading through your past questions, you have been searching for something to help make your FM bearable for quite a long time. I do not have FM, but I did listen, just the other night, to a woman who does and after using Xango for the last couple of months is now getting the symptoms under control. She said that she still has some pain which isn’t surprising because no one is saying that Xango is an actual cure for FM. But she is now able to live and enjoy her life and that is what really matters.
I would suggest doing some research and the mangosteen fruit as it refers to your condition. If you would like to know more about Xango, please send and e-mail which you can do through my profile. My website is also noted there.
Hope you find something the helps.

Q: Has anyone in here ever successfully gone off anti-depressants?
I am currently taking Cymbalta. I’ve been on several different types thru the years, and have tried four times to wean myself off anti-depressants, but even after being off them for months, the mood swings and other bad effects happen. I don’t buy into the thought that the mood swings are due to the depression coming back…it’s because of the extreme chemical change that our bodies go through after being on these drugs for years. I want to learn to cope with life on my own and deal with things. The drug makes me feel so tired and indifferent to life, like I’m not really living.
A prime example of what I’m talking about is the shooting at NIU on February 14th. The shooter was a nice guy..no threat to anyone ever. He went off meds cold turkey and became totally irrational, a monster even. People who claim that these mood swings are a result of the depression/anxiety returning and who deny that the medication has altered the person’s chemistry just aren’t being truthful.
A: Lots of people have gone through this, including those who were prescribed the drugs for non-psychiatric reasons. There seems to be no difference in the withdrawal profile, including the standard withdrawal mood swings, agitation, tiredness, depression, headaches, nausea – well, you know the list.
The ‘indifference’ is part of how these drugs work, it is called emotional blunting. Some people like the ‘don’t care’ effect; for others it can blight their lives, particularly if they haven’t been warned about it in advance. Tiredness is a common effect, too.
To learn about antidepressant withdrawal, consider reading the book about it, then you will be armed with the facts: “The Antidepressant Solution” by Dr Glenmullen (Chapter One and exerpts available on-line, see link below)
Once you’ve read that, research the 10% reduction method.
Then read Dr Healy’s on-line information on Halting SSRIs (one link below, but may not be the most recent version).
After you’ve worked through that lot, you should be able to assess how to proceed, and what to do given your reaction – mild, moderate, severe – to a withdrawal drop.
Anecdotally, cold turkey gives a worse experience, and longer post-drug effects. Some people wean off over a year or so, taking it very slowly and gently.
Q: Back pain almost four months after c-section?
Had my son Nov. 14th, via c-section. He was breech and it couldn’t be helped.
I had the normal constipation and pain from the spinal block injection site, but it went away and now it’s come back. It’s like I go to bend over and I feel as if my back is giving out.
Another thing, I was on Cymbalta 30mg, and had to quit cold turkey b/c I ran out of pills and can’t affoard to buy anymore. The doc gave me forms to fill out and send to the drug company, but I can’t affoard to get a script in the mean time. I’ve been this way about three weeks.
I feel pressure buildup in my stomach and around my back.
Has this happened to any of you ladies?
A: I have the same problem with my back. I had a spinal and it took 8tries to get it in my back. I was told it was due to the redistribution of my weight due to twins.
Q: How will I ever afford my doctor visits and medications?
I am 18 and living in Washington with my mom and stepdad and boyfriend. I have anxiety, depression, a touch of OCD, recurring ovarian cysts, very bad vision that requires me to get a new pair of glasses every six months, acid reflux disease, and a tendency towards random and unexplainable minor medical problems.
To keep my anxiety, depression, and compulsive behavior in check, I’m on three pills: trazodone, cymbalta, and clomipramine. I take omeprazole for my acid reflux. I keep having to change birth controls to keep from getting cysts, and to keep my periods regular.
I see a psychiatrist whenever my pills run out, to let him know how I’m doing on the latest combination. I see a therapist once or twice a month. And I go to the family doctor, ENTs, gastrointestinal doctors, gynecologists, ophthalmologists, and the ER slightly more often than the average 18 year old girl.
I only JUST realized that in another month, when I can’t afford enough classes to go to college full-time, I will be kicked off of my parents’ insurance. My boyfriend works for them, and is paid $300 a month, and he had to buy his own insurance. But he only had kidney stones once, and doesn’t take any prescription meds or see any doctors regularly. I am still looking for a job, but I don’t think I’m qualified for anything that gives benefits, because this will be my first job. Not to mention, I do plan on taking college classes still.
My parents expect us to be out of the house before next summer. I already knew it would be difficult affording a place, new furniture, groceries, etc. I didn’t even think about doctors visits and medications and emergencies…
How am I going to afford all of this??
As it is, I get survivor’s benefits from social security from my dad. Those too will be cut off if I can’t go to college full-time. My parents aren’t rich, and the ONLY money I have is from my dad, which my mom usually uses as child support.
Basically, my boyfriend and I will be shoved out on our own with no more than $800, if I don’t get a job above minimum wage, and maybe up to $1500 if I do…
Panicking!!!
Oh and to preempt an answer I see coming… I can NOT get off most of my medications. I need my depression and anxiety pills, or I simply can’t function like a normal person. If I’m not on birth control, I bleed out twice a month and get multiple, painful cysts. Without my acid reflux meds, I get stomach polyps. I MAY be able to do without the OCD medication, but it would lower my standard of living.
Also, my boyfriend’s money already goes to several expenses. Holiday gifts, food, car insurance, school, etc.
Of course I know about cheap (sort of) insurance, and state aid and stuff… I just don’t think it will cover all of that. My meds and doctors are expensive!
A: The first place to start is to ask your doctors what the long term treatment is going to be. It sounds as if you may qualify for disability income and maybe rehab to get educated enough to get a good job that will pay for your insurance. If that doesn’t work I agree that you should qualify for state aid.

A: I had back pain from the spinal for 4 or 5 months after my son was born via c-section. I managed it with Advil (or any other type of ibuprofen) and a hot water bottle.
My doc said it was normal. But it sucked

Q: 5-htp and Valerian root?
Are these two herbs okay to take together for anxiety. I have been off of cymbalta for 2 weeks and bought this today as an herbal replacement. I suffer from really bad haziness and anxiety.
A: Yes. 5-HTP is a natural serotonin precursor that’s found in tons of different foods. It gently elevates serotonin levels to relieve depression and to promote sleep. Valerian works through GABA receptors, a completely separate system from serotonin. Benzodiazepines and barbiturates work through this system, particularly the GABAa receptor. It has inhibitory effects when activated. It inhibits the random action potentials that cascade across the brain and cause anxiety attacks. Don’t mix either one with alcohol or benzodiazepines. If you are on antidepressants, take it in lower doses at first. If you are taking an MAOI (a particularly malignant type of antidepressant), such as phenelzine (Nardil), don’t take 5-HTP period. Lower GABA levels causes systems to fire unopposed and valerian will decrease the chances of a chain reaction (cascade) occuring in the nervous system. They are perfectly compatible. In fact, they would have a terrific synergy and I would really recommend the combination. Try it and see if it’s for you! Hope this helps and that you feel better soon!
Q: I really want to be dead.?
O.k. so I’m bi-polar, but I just want to be dead. I ‘ve felt this way for 20 years (since I was 9). Today I bought a whole bottle of sleeping pills. I want to use them, but I kinda don’t. Can someone give me a reason to live.
Oh I’ m on lithobid & Cymbalta & abilify, but I haven’t taken them in 4 days. The bottles I have now were picked up from the pharm. on 7/26/06 and I still have about a week left, so you see how irreguarly I take um.
O>K. so now all of you have really made me sad that I even thought of killing my self. I just hate swallowing my pills 5 a day.
I HATE IT!
Is there a patch?
A: Maybe you need a change in your meds. You have felt suicidal since you have been 9 years old…thats a long time to feel that way. Have you spoken to your psych about it….maybe your mood could be changed simply with a change in your medication.
Why should you live? Because you dont know what is around the corner. And may I say sleeping pills may not do the trick either….you may not end up dead, you may end up in a psychiatric hospital with brain damage being dependant on your carers to feed you, to shower you, to wipe your bottom…Nope, not for me.
No one who has succeeded in killing themselves have ever come back to tell us what it was like on the other side. I did, however, read some personal stories about people who tried to kill themselves but were unsuccessful. One in particular sticks in my mind. She was rushed to the hosptial after trying to kill herself….she died on the operating table. When they revived her she said while she was dead she felt these horrible ugly creatures tearing at her flesh…it was never ending. She said the pain she was suffering was the worst pain she has ever experinced. She said she would never try to kill herself again because the experience of being dead was just too horrifying and no emotional pain she suffered in this life could even compare to the pain and suffering she experienced in the next.
A lot of people will dispute these near death experiences, but I believe them, and a lot of these experiences havent been so nice. The spirit world has neither been proven or disproven, but I dont think I would take the chance of being eternally tormented in the next life if I chose to suicide.
It has got to be the meds that are making you feel like this. Feeling suicidal for 20 years means there is something wrong with whatever messages you are getting in your brain. Go talk to your Psych….some changes I think need to be made and made quickly.
Life is great…you havent experienced that, and I dont know what else I can say to make you want to live. You are an individual with thoughts that no-one else can share….no-one knows how you are feeling…not really. Honestly, go talk to your psych…..as this is not a new feeling for you. I could give you heaps of suggestions about why you should live if it was just a circumstantial thing….but in your case its not. You need some intervention. You need to take more control, especially in taking your medication. You havent taken this medication in 4 days…..are your suicidal thoughts worse? If they are, then you need to get back on the meds. You are the master of your own destiny….you are the only one who can take control of your life.
Q: anyone have any info on vitamins ?
i stopped my 30mg of cymbalta and feel great but to keep the stress and anxiety down i wanted to go a more natural way. i bought GNC Women’s Ultra Mega Wellness Program that contains a multivitamin suport, bone health, balanced mood support, heart & cholesterol health, and digestive support. i was wondering since i have only been off cymbalta for 6 days can you take this with the mood support will it cause a reaction of any kind. the mood support contains :iron, passion flower herb, rhodiola rosea root extract, vitaberry plus and suntheanine L-Theanine. i called the pharmacy and talked to the pharmacist and he said it would be fine that these were all natural and they would not enteract with the cymbalta being it is prob still in my system. i took 30 mg for 3 months. just if anyone has any info i would love the feedback.
thanks
A: I would just take a food based natural multi, and a calcium, maybe even selenium! : )
Q: No orgasm, antidepressents, going to try vitamins; any advice on how to increase the chance of an orgasm?
Ok, here are the details.
I’m on the following medications:
cymbalta, effexor, lamictal, trazadone, buspar, klonopin
I’ve noticed that since the cymbalta was increased, I haven’t been able to have an orgasm. Now, when I was only on wellbutrin; I could have them all the time; sometimes 3 right after the other.
But I’ve never been able to have an orgasm during sex or oral-sex. Only with the use of a vibrator or shower. Now, even the vibrator won’t work and I’m afraid I’m desensitized.
I’m just wondering if anyone found a good way to increase the chances even with someone taking antidepressants. I’d like to have one even with oral sex, so that I can stop “faking it”, which I know is a big “no-no”. Although to get an orgasm before, with the vibrator, it had to be at the highest setting, so I can see why oral sex wouldn’t do it.
Today I bought Virmax Ds for women, a multivitamin with extra B, a vitamin combination for people taking effexor, and an vitamin E oil/cream.
Any suggestions?
A: SSRIs are famous for that.
ask your doc if you can switch to something like wellbutrin, that has low sexual side effects.
Q: Is it really that bad stopping antidepressants?
Ive stopped mine – i was only on them for a month, and honestly, it was pretty much just like going into the shop and buying a loaf of bread – i was in and out of the dr’s withing 3 minutes with a script for 5 months for Cymbalta (60mgs) – my usual doctor was on holidays and i had to go and see this other idiot. I used to be on zoloft many years ago, and i just stopped them myself with no ill effects. I havent taken the cymbalta for about 5 days now and i feel fine.
A: I am in the exact same boat as you- I was on zoloft and everything else about 9 years ago. When I came off them (at that time it was citalopram) it was very hard, I think because I was on them for so long. The dose was pretty low. This time I was on escitalopram (Lexapro), the dose was much stronger (30mg) and I was on it for about 3-4 weeks. I stopped cold turkey and did not experience any ill side effects. I have to suggest one thing to you though- START TAKING FISH OIL!!! Get at least 1000mg of fish oil into you every day, even more! You cannot overdose on it! Make sure you take it with some Vit C and E. And it’s good to have it with your most fattiest meal of the day. Another thing I can suggest and I will be trying is the natural product callede SAMe. I have heard it is more effective than anti-depressants!!!! How good is that! Your local health food shop should have these. If not, I know there are plenty on eBay. Another is St John’s Wart if you suffer from anxiety-like symptoms, I usually do but after taking the fish oil for a few weeks I have been so calm and happier then I have been in a very long time! I have posted some links about these for you to read.
Q: What is wrong with me sexually?
Ok, I have no idea what is wrong with me. My problem is getting worse and worse. It seems like getting an erection is harder and harder to achieve and my sensitivity is decreasing tremendously. I have been seriously constipated for months which I can contribute to the methadone I am taking. I wonder if that is having an affect on my erections and sensitivity. If it is, it is getting worse over time. I was also on cymbalta, but the doctor told me if I were to quit the cymbalta, it would be easier to achieve an erection and the sensitivity would come back. However, it is still getting worse. I don’t see how I can be on methadone for a while, then all of a sudden this happens. I just started taking adderall, but I don’t think that has anything to do with it.
The only thing I can think of, is that the constipation which has been lasting for months due to the methadone is causing adverse affects with my sex drive and erection. I bought some libido supplements, but they don’t seem to help. Does anyone know what could be the problem?? Or what I can do or take to solve this problem?
Thanks.
A: Go to AOL Search – type in – Methadone Side Effects – a page will pop up with a large number of websites for you to select. Many say methadone can cause erection problems. Also – check out Adderall.
Studies show that out of two hundred most used medicines; as many as sixteen are likely to cause impotence. Among the most risky are drugs used for the treatment of high blood pressure, depression, insomnia, ulcers, tumors, plus a couple of medications used to combat allergy.
